Help needed with 717.400 shifter rod lengths
Going through my 5-speed parts, I have three sets of shift linkages, as pictured below. I have two questions about them:
1) How do I know if these are 616 or 617 shifter rods? Anyone have any lengths for me to reference? I am also going to contact the seller and see if he know. 2) All the sets are the same length, but while two of the sets match, the third has different rod shapes. Would it be safe to assume that they will all work in the same applications?

Dont even worry about it, looks like you have them in correct groups of three anyway.
When you install the transmission and shifter into your application, lock the shifter in position using an allen key underneath (there is a hole through all the linkages underneath for this). Then put your transmission 3 shift arms in neutral. Then its a matter of adjusting the rods to fit, or cutting them down as needed. I have made manual shift linkages out of automatic bars in the past. Its actually pretty straight forward and intuitive to get it hooked up Always consider this- The longest shift rod application in a 123 will always be a 240 4 speed. Since thats the most common application for 4 speed in the US, thats the most common shift linkage. The 5 speed is a longer transmission, and in a turbo application closer still to the shifter. Where i am going with this is shift linkages will almost always need to be trimmed down for your oddball application, never lengthened. This means you can build linkages out of anything if you have a tap and die set. Its a lot easier to shorten them

JB3 speaks truth!
You might want to peek at my build thread where I shortened the shift rods to fit my application. I welded mine but you could also thread the rods where you cut them and use the connector nuts that I used to thread the whole deal together. Also, invest in new bushings. They're cheap and solve a lot of problems. Dan |

Thanks, guys! Asking mainly because I am trying to figure out which it is before I sell them to my buyer. I sent him a link to this thread.
The seller replied and said that if they all match, they are most likely 616 rods.

I can help in a typically inverse kind of a way!
Here's a picture of some W123 4 speed shifter linkages I got for someone here ![]()

Sorry I forgot to say. I understand they were fitted behind an OM617a and a four speed box...
