hum and vibration when steering to right

On my new-to-me 1987 300TD the car makes very audible hum/growl when the steering is even slightly to the right, i.e. even when going straight if the wheel is a tick to the right of 12:00 the noise is audible.

It sounds like it is coming from the front right but it is hard to be sure.

When I first got into the car I assumed it was wheel bearing issue, however I replaced the inner and outer wheel bearing on both front hubs when doing the brakes recently without any discernable effect on the noise.

Any tips on what I should troubleshoot next?

Put the appropriate corner up on a jack stand and roll the wheel to see if you have a bad bearing. Also check your suspension to see if it's loose. And inspect your brakes. Any of those things can influence your problem.

Sorry, missed the bearing part. I'd check suspension and brakes.

I take it there's no noise when you move the steering wheel with the car still (engine on) so it's not the PS pump.

Right, it isn't the power steering. It's only when driving. The suspension overall is very worn so it's not surprising that it is making a noise. I'll just have to start going through it.

Rear wheel bearings.

It's a weird sound. Hard to pinpoint pull the wheel and rotor off and rotate the hub with your hand. Both rear wheels have to be off the ground. If you can wiggle the hub at all...

I had a similar issue on my 83. I too suspected front wheel bearings, both were good. Then I found a bad tie rod end. Replaced and the problem went away.
