malfunctioning seat belt chime -- 2005 CDI

From time to time, the front passenger side seatbelt chime/warning will sound even though there's no one in the seat. Also, I can't place so much as a magazine on the passenger seat without the chime going off. (The airbag sensor, which must be separate, still works fine.)

I've done some reading on a couple of other forums where this has been discussed, but most of the posts about deactivating the chime degenerate into flame wars over pro vs. con of not wearing a seat belt. But what I've managed to gather is that two solutions seem to be: 1) pay the dealer a not insignificant sum to reset the seat weight sensor, or 2) ask the dealer to use STAR to turn off the chime, which they're very unlikely to be willing to do out of fear of liability.

So, just thought I'd check here to see if anyone knows of any other way to fix this that doesn't involve the dealer?
