OM60X water pump difference

Vehicle: 87 300TD

What is the difference between water pumps with cast iron impellers versus composite impellers?

Since my radiator decided it did not want to retain coolant anymore, I'm replacing it and some other cooling system components. Water pump, thermostat and lower hose are also on the list due to not knowing their history.

Are there any other things I should inspect or replace while I've got the cooling system open?

The plastic impellor and the stamped sheet metal are both used on the cheapest of the cheap. You want the cast impellor. You'll have overheat issues with the stamped, and the plastic one is Uro style...

I replaced my water pump about 1.5 years ago. I ended up calling the dealer and they sold me a reman water pump for $125. Try your dealer to see if they do the same.

The water pump I got a few years ago was 50 bucks... I think it was a Laso. High quality, and with a cast impellor.

I suppose prices could have changed, but this was only a few years ago. I also have a Laso brand timing chain tensioner installed and it's a high quality piece. I'd say the company is a good bet. My water pump came with a gasket but it was folded in the box and I hate dealing with that. I didn't know it came with a gasket so I ordered a separate one which was not folded when delivered. I forget the gasket manufacturer though.
