I wonder if the company really sold 1,000s of them -- unless they market to Gurkha Motors or Metric Motors. If you can verify their claims of quality, then maybe a good deal.

I sent him an email with several questions. See what he says.

if it matters, I have used "right way" brand pistons while rebuilding a very old toyota engine, they are chinese made but are not bad, the engine that was rebuilt (due to oil sump puncture) ran for another 200,000 kms before the vehicle was totalled, the engine still had good compression.

Cant say if they would hold up in this case of Benz diesel. the original kolbenschmidt pistons are extremely high quality and very tough. I think a better solution would be to install new sleeves in the block and get good used pistons - if its turbodiesel as the cost of pistons on that engine is shocking.

Before you decide, I would Google "Rothenbacher" and "Prothe." It's all the same guy, and not so much that he's a problem, but more the quality of the parts he sells. It's up to you to check it out and make up your own mind.

Thanks for the tip.
He sounds like bad news. I was thinking it was too good to be true.

This would be nice if it's real, and I could get it for around 2K.

You could make an offer if they still have it. Or discuss the lowest price they would consider.

I know there are still excellent used engines of your type out there as well. May take some work to locate a good one.

He says it only has 6000K miles.

Here is his original listing.

Mercedes 240D Engine & Transmission

Mercedes 240D Engine & Transmission - $4000 (san mateo)

Mercedes Benz 240D 1982 Complete Engine & Manual Transmission. We are a high end Mercedes Benz (exclusive) repair shop in San Mateo (since 1988) We rebuilt this engine to new (New -pistons, valve job, oil pump, timing chain, starter motor, alternator, inj. pump, transmission bearings, clutch, on and on) The car was then totaled 22,000 miles later. We removed the engine/trans and were going to find a donor body and never did. Junk yard motors are $1500 with a zillion miles. This motor belongs in a car restoration project. Metric Motors sells 240D Long Blocks for $7450. This is an unusual find.

He lists this for a while, then don`t see it, then it is listed for a week or so.
So what is it, 6K or 22K miles?

It is tempting isn`t it?

There's this one in FL too which could be a weekend trip from ATL.

Mercedes Diesel Engine and Auto Transmission Remanufactured 1974 1985 240D 300 | eBay

The guy's been trying to sell it on ebay for months. I messaged him at one point about separating the engine from trans which he wasn't opposed to doing.

I asked him if he would sell just the long block and got back a reply about how much it cost to rebuild one of these if you use real mercedes parts.
I should have just told him I 'm not doing a ground up restoration, just looking for a decent engine in my DD.

I would contact them and ask where these are made. They are great to deal with and offer lifetime warranty which I am sure you don't want to take advantage of.

Thanks for the link. I think that these pistons should work.
