W123 '82 300CD odd window malfunction
The passengers side front window stopped working a couple months ago. Since it was working intermittently if I was pressing the switch repeatedly or at an angle, I figured that was the culprit.
After taking the switch out, cleaning it and reassembling (I've done this before on my 81), it stopped working all together. I was very careful replacing everything as it was, so I'm stumped. After reading a check procedure in here, when I have the key turned to ACC position the dome light will dim when I push the switch to close the window (it's stuck in the closed position) but doesn't dim when I push the switch to open the window. I feel like I'm missing something stupid here ... please jump in. Thanks!

Taking it apart seems like it has few pieces, would another run at cleaning it or it's just not worth the bother??
I have an 81 CD as well and I took those apart and cleaned years ago. Still working fine but they are the ones with the chrome trim around the edge of the cluster. Maybe beefier??

The lack of dimming on one side of the switch only generally means a defective switch. You can remove the door panel and apply 12 volts to each side of the window motor. If you get movement both ways - you have a defective switch.

Try taking the switch apart again. Maybe one of the steel balls got out of position when you snapped it back together. A dab of grease on the spring and ball will help.
Also check the towers that hold the springs and balls. Sometimes they crack. |
