w116 turn indicator / flasher signal relay
my turn indicator doesn't work - well it works intermittently ;-) but not the way it should be
I looked under the the dash to locate the relay. I found many relays but I didn't find the turn indicator relay. Could anyone post a picture of where this relay is located exactly? I have a 1980 300SD Turbodiesel (w116 chassis) thnx

On the w116 and early w123 (thru 1980) the relay is inside the hazard flasher switch. Which is why it's a bit large.
Later cars use a separate relay. The early style switch/relay tends to be very expensive, even used. My advice would be to post a want to buy (WTB) ad on the used parts for sale and wanted subforum on this board to find one for reasonable money.

Not too long ago I also had intermittent turn signal problem.
It ended up being a poor chassis ground. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/375603-w116-right-front-turn-signal-electrical-gremlin.html Try cleaning the chassis ground first.

thanks for the write up. I cleaned the grounds that I could find. I also changed the hazard switch itself - I have 3 hazard switches which I cleaned - but the issue is still the same. If I press the hazard switch down then all 4 flasher lights stay on continuously. If I push down/ up the indicator switch then the indicator light stays on as well.

Looking deeper...according to the FSM there is a solid state flasher unit for the 1980 300SD.
Page 112 of the FSM here shows a solid state flasher unit with two connections to the hazard switch and one connection to the combination switch. Follow the black/green/white wire from the combination switch (or the black/red or black/green/white wires from the hazard switch) and it (they) should lead you to the elusive solid state flasher unit. I think it resides in center console area, close to the hazard switch. I believe the MB Part number is 008211063, and it is available from the forum sponsor.

ok - found it - the relay that handles the emergency flasher blinking and the indicators is indeed located under the dash more to the left side above the parking brake.
The issue is that the part number printed on my relay and also the relay that I found in the basement (which I use as replacement) is different than the one here in peachparts. Anyway the problem is solved and everything works correctly now! thnx!
