The nerve of some people's kids...

What? Someone snuck the wrong serial number onto my engine. By golly, those glow plugs look wrong, too. 12mm on that outside wrenching part- and the beauty is that the glow plugs are wired in series!
This make it interesting.
What year is this engine from? This one is a 616.912 10 173724....
Blast them gremlins!
Which year is this engine from? Is this one supposed to have carbide rockers?
As I am looking into the timing chain replacement job just coming onto the radar, I am curious about the rock and roll of that engine at idle. After I start the engine, it has a regular added feature...the RPM's rise for no apparent reason- as if there is some sensor or solenoid calling for more power.

Aside from the perceived anomalies, this car is faster than my other 240D, it drops into first gear with a tap of the pedal from a stop, and I am not entering freeway traffic white-knuckled as I was with the other car. I really can't complain about the performance, and this is a little weird as I know a few things are amiss here...

What's a carbide rocker?

The 240 does not rock much unless you have a dead cylinder. The 617 rocks and hops around at idle as a normal thing but the 240 mainly just vibrates.

Some Mercedes engines got brazed cabide rocker faces

...and cold quenched camshafts to run with them. That condition exists under my hood.
I can't find any carbide faced rocker arms, so I am working to get this engine tightened up, I'll need a new Mercedes oil pan, and the timing chain and guides replaced, new valve rotators, springs, and stem seals. The timing chain job will be a good excuse to pull the injection pump and replace a leaky mount gasket, which probably got some sealant when some PO worked there; the pump was rotated at one point after the seal install, and VOILA! it is leaking.
I am doing all this because I want a good running engine, and sealing it up so I can run synthetic in there should extend the life of the cam and rockers.

616.912 is the later engine, I think. Stellite inserts on the rockers, hi lift cam, ~65 hp. GP's should be pencil style in parallel. What body/year is it in? 123 or 115?

If it's in a 115 or older 123, it may have been swapped in.

This is in the '79 240D

While this may be an upgrade for the '79, I am going to have to do something about those series-wired glowplugs. Not-so-upgraded.

It may be that one will need to look on the end of the cam to see what number is stamped on it...

When you pull the Timing Chain check the end play on the Timer. If the timer Busihing/s is worn it can destroy some vacuum pumps.

A240Ds have a shaft that Timier Gear is attached to with a worm gear that turns the Oil Pump. The other busings on that shaft should also be check.

The Fuel Injection Pump can be removed seperatly from the Timer Gear.

When I changed the Block to Fuel Injection Pump Gasket I found that the OE gasket from Mercedes was kind of on the thin side. I ended up using it as a template to make another gasket of thicker gasket material.
