OM 642 camshaft position sensor replacement
So as the adventure with the W210 air conditioning was winding down my wife informs me that the check engine light is lit on the ML.
I had noticed it starting to idle a little more roughly, not alarmingly bad, but you could tell a little more vibration sitting at the light. No codes showing until the other night. So I plugged in the OBDII scanner and up popped P0340. Quick search revealed "camshaft position sensor". So I got one from the dealer and changed it out. Not hard to do once you get the stupid air boxes and Y-pipe out of the way. It is on the passenger side v-bank right on top of the head near the oil filler. You need an E10 socket to remove the air boxes and the bolt holding in the sensor. Easy peasy. We went on a long drive yesterday and the performance improvement was noticeable. MPGs back up a couple points, smooth idle at stoplights, and better acceleration. I really think the engine computer was struggling with finding the right moment to inject since the sensor was probably drifting out of spec. Note that if this sensor fails it will leave you stranded. The computer has no idea when to inject if it cannot determine the operating angle of the engine so it will shut down or just not start. Not like the old IDI engines where the injection pump is tied to the cam and is locked in time with the engine.

Also how much was it? Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk

136 k miles
Part cost just under $100 for the genuine MB or about $40 for aftermarket. I didn't want to take any chances on aftermarket since it's a mission critical part. Part number 005 153 13 28, the genuine MB includes the o-ring shown below it in the EPC.
