Anyone ever use w124 oil filter on a w123?

Are the oil filters identical except the w124 filter is not as tall?. I have the shorter w124 filter in my 83 300d turbo and don't want change it if it is no big deal. Mike

My earlier post had an incorrect title.

For as simple and as inexpensive as an oil filter change is, you just shouldn't chance anything. If anything engine-related were ever to happen, you'd always wonder....

If the 300D's oil filter is anything like the 300SDL's, there's a drain valve in the bottom of the filter housing that the oil filter pushes closed. If your filter is too short, you'll be bypassing nearly all of the oil through the drain valve instead of the filter.

Use the correct filter, there's no other alternative.

The filter HAS TO BE THE RIGHT LENGTH!

Just too short means ZERO FILTRATION from it...

Get a baldwin filter for your car and use it.

Although it makes me Sad to install and throw away a new oil filter in 24 hours. I cowboy upped and installed a new correct STP in its place. 8 bucks for wrong filter, 13. Bucks for correct filter. Mike

I've been using Mann filters exclusively in mine...I thought that was the filter of choice. Can you elaborate on why you like/recommend Baldwin?

There are some old long oil filter threads from the past talking about the Cotton gin waste with the sticks and bugs in it.
Mann and a few other filters use the Cotton Gin waste.

There are pictures of filters taken apart showing all the cotton laid out with the bugs etc...

I think the Baldwin is a paper pleated filter. Susposedly cleaner.

What ever filter used, should fit the application it is designed for.

Baldwin has a larger bypass section, and a better full flow spec than all the others

Dont understand why you need to use other makers oil filters . For piece of mind , go to Mercedes and pick up the right filter for your car. People fit an expensive filter and pay extra for it only to purchase a cheap oil .

What the heck. Added 2 more qrts. Oil starts to show on stick. Drove to store. No oil shows. Add 2 more. Drive home. Run it on Ramps. No huge oil leaks Are visible. . Now oil level. shows a quarter inch over full mark So I need to suck some oil out. Crazy.

The oil system holds a lot of oil after a drive. Best to let it settle an hour before checking level... Also, if car is tilted it will show low or high.
