OM617 IP installed wrong?
Hello all,
I just got a set of used injector steel lines for my 84 300d because they were leaking. When I went to install the new lines they would not line up. I contacted the place I bought them from with measurements of both the old and new lines and was told that my IP was not lined up properly and the hard lines I had were bent to match it. Sure enough I found junkyard numbers on my IP and the old lines look all bent compared to the new ones. Has anyone ever run into a problem like this? |

yes.
Every time I adjust the injection timing on one of these engines it happens. The lines are bent to accommodate the position of the pump. Do not adjust the pump so that lines fit, that is backwards thinking and repair. |

It is a real problem for everyone.... the chances of crossthreading are high... which is why some move the IP with the lines attached... which take a lot of power...and leaves them in tension... a real pain either way...

If someone removed the Fuel Injection Pump and did not center the Studs in the Kidney Slots they would have the Fuel Injection Pump tipping at too much of an angle for and would have had to distore the stock Lines to get them to fit.
It is also possible someone had a new set of Fuel Injection Hard Lines made up and and had to bend them to shape themselves. Do you have an MW of M Fuel Injection Pump and did the Fuel Injection Hard Lines you bought for the same IP that you have.

I have the MW pump and lines. I was going to just bend the new lines to match it but I should probably check the timing now. The IP seems to be tipped more toward the engine because the new lines are slightly longer. If the IP was on wrong would it be tipped away from the engine instead?

it should be tipped in whatever direction makes the injection timing correct.
the angle of the pump in relation to the engine makes no difference. each one is different |

Ok, I'll just check the timing and then bend the lines to fit. Thanks for your help.

That is true but if someone did not center the Kidney Slots it is also possible that the next time you re-time there is no adjusment left.

You could also remove one of the 3 nuts that and view the positon of the Stud. If it is close to the center of the Kidney Slots every thing is normal especilly if your Engine is runnng OK you could leave it.
