Vac Pump Line
Another not so brilliant question, all. In my '77 240D, there is a clear, plastic tube that comes from the vacuum pump and runs to the top of the air filter. On the air filter end of that tube, there is a connector. Could one of you illustrious gurus please tell me what the bloody thing is called?
I've attached a picture below and added and arrow for clarity. Disclaimer: I've lifted this pic from an old thread on the site. It perfectly shows what I'm trying to point out. If that is not allowed, please delete and accept my apologies. |

That would be part of the fresh air intake line supplying the vacuum pump with clean air. As far as i know that is only available as part of the entire line, so you will have to get a new or used inlet line for the vacuum pump

Any reason why a rubber vacuum Hose could not be used to replace it?

Well, It seems a bit sharp, so I'd like to have whatever part I need to join the clear hose to the air filter cover for a good seal.

I think that tube contains air removed by the vacuum pump. If for example the diaphragm fails in your vacuum pump you will see oil come out of it.
Because this fault make an engine appear to be burning oil if it occurs. They changed the termination of it in the later years of this model. . To me it could end anywhere with no issue I can think of. Just left open should be okay for example. Simply because all it is normally emitting is the air scavenged by the vacuum pump. As for the part you are asking about it is just a hose barb probably. I have absolutely no ideal of why they just did not vent the vacuum pump to atmosphere anyways. Some little elf in the black forest wanted to complicate it. Or was it a preventative measure to stop oil being spewed out into the environment if the diaphragm in your vacuum pump leaked? The next generation fed the output into the engine base I though. May not be right about that but the termination was changed is certain. |

OK, how about this. Does anyone know the availability of just the grommet?

I got off my rear end, measured the hole and went to Lowe's.
The grommet that fits is 1-1/8 OD x 5/8 ID. This fits perfectly.

The question was not meaning to be sharp. You should of course have what you want.

NO NO! I meant the hole in the air filter lid had sharp edges! Diesel911, you can be as sharp as you like! With all the advice you've given me, you've earned it!
