I recently adjusted the valves but that didn't help much. I also did a diesel purge.
I guess I'll buy new injectors since I'm not sure when the previous owner replaced them.

I'm a little reluctant to raise the idle to fix the problem. The can doesn't have a tachometer. Is there an easy to to calculate the rpm's?

Thanks.

If there is a VCV on the IP, then someone before you bought the car swapped in the 4-spd manual trans.
They just didn`t remove the VCV.

The manual trans does not use any vacuum. There is no Modulator with a manual trans.

When you turn the Idle control knob, push the accelerator peddle a little to take the stress off the plastic knob.
The idle control cable is used mostly when the engine is cold to smooth it out until it warms us.
The cable is still available from the dealer, for around $50. I just bought one.

That cable won't fix your problem...but sounds like it needs doing anyway.

Need to adjust the idle governor to solve the idle RPM (most likely...)
The idle knob cable just pulls on the accelerator linkage, and can lead to the engine semi-running away. The engine when cold needs more fuel to idle right, when it does warm up that excess fuel causes it to rev up by itself (as my neighbours have found out a couple times ) as the accelerator "over-rides" the idle governor.
