New Alternator; can't get the lower mounting bolt started!

On the 1984 300DT, I have the upper mounting bolt installed but I am having a difficult time getting the bottom mounting bolt to thread into the back of the mount. I've tried tapping on the bolt to try and seat it and rocking the alternator itself gently to try and get the bolt to go. Any ideas?

If you have tightened the upper bolt at all try loosening it ,might give you a bit more wiggle room.

Sometimes those brackets crack. Its down in there pretty far so its often hard to spot the crack. If you need one I believe I have a complete uncracked bracket.

There are TWO upper bolts!

The adjuster bolt, AND the rear bracket bolt... Both have to be loose to line everything up... And LEAVE THEM LOOSE while you tighten the belt tensioner bolt so nothing gets bent!

Thanks to everyone for the advice; I ended up loosening both top bolts which allowed the alternator "wiggle room" which allowed me to go ahead and line up the bottom bolt and screw it in. I also sprayed some brake cleaner in the hole to help clean out any grease which might have been in there mucking up the works! I also installed two new Contitech belts (the old belts had literally SMOKED when the previous alternator bearing froze up!!!).

I then tightened the adjustment screw to place the proper tension on the new Contitech belts. When I press down on the belts they depress approximately 1/2". I took the car for a test drive this AM and so far so good. I need to change the fuel filters also. I've got to get my hands on a 24mm wrench because I've been using the wrong size wrench on the top fuel filter bolt and it shows.

I had the car up on steel ramps for easy underneath access. For some reason when I came out from underneath the car, I got in a hurry and raised up and hit my head pretty good on the bumper. Took a couple of aspirin last night which helped me sleep. We all need to be more aware of physical constraints when working underneath a car. When in doubt move S-L-O-W-L-Y........
