W123 negative battery lug size and wire length

Specifically, whats the size of the lug that mounts the battery cable to the inner fender?

Im looking to upgrade my cables to 1/0, but need to know lug size. Im not near my cars at the point in time when id like to order supplies...

Just want to get the right lug size...

Thanks!

If you remove the Blot that holds the battery cable to the fender you can measure the diameter of the Hole.

Of course I can. Except that I'm not near my two cars, and am near some nice heavy gauge wire and a nice crimping tool. Thus i had hoped someone might know these stats.

Im guessing its a 13mm bolt, which would mean a ___mm shaft diameter.

More than likely it is 8 MM but I'd use a 10 MM lug to be sure.

I recently replaced the negative ground cable on my SDL with #1 cable and used a standard lug with 1/4" hole from my work. The hole was so close to the original size on the original ground strap it wasn't worth looking for anything else.

Im a bit surprised to hear that! If the bolt is 8mm diameter, which is DIN standard, then 1/4 shouldnt fit and 5/16 should...

Maybe they do this to have more lug surface area touching the body??

Just because it is listed as .25" doesn't mean it IS .25". If you buy a .25" flat washer I guarantee you the center diameter is greater than .25".

M.M.C. and all that GD&T jazz.

Yeah but 1/4 is 0.25", 5/16 is 0.315" and 8mm is 0.3149", as I recall. Thats a bug difference between 1/4 and 8mm.

The lugs we had in stock have a bit of slop on 1/4" studs, was quite tight on the fender bolt. I'd imagine they're probably really 8mm/.25" "universal" designed or something.

I would help out with that but my Wife drives the Mercedes and is in another City.

I agree with the other guy on 5/16 inch hole.

This looks like about a foot -

I mean cable length, not lug hole diameter

Buy a foot of cable, crimp a 1/4" lug on one end, crimp a 5/16" lug on the other end, lop off the end you don't need when you get home.

Do yourself a favor. Run another grounding cable from the earthing location over to the engine block, preferably the starter mounting.

Don't forget to vacuum out those hinge pockets since you're right there.
