240D idle control cable - missing part
I'm wondering if a member could help me identify a missing part on the manual idle control system of my '79 240D. When the cable broke a while ago apparently the missing part vibrated loose and fell off on the road somewhere. If you look at the attached picture I've put a red arrow to where something is missing - it is the piece that the cable sleeve works against when the idle control cable is tightened up, pulling the injection pump lever to raise the idle.
It appears that the receiving hole for the part might be threaded, which makes me think that the missing part is something like a threaded ferrule, or tube, with a small hole just large enough to pass the cable wire at some depth in it. The threaded nature might be so that the idle level can be set without messing with the clamping nut on the wire. When I talked to the local dealer they sent me a parts drawing. It really doesn't quite match up with what I expected; part 272 (123-302-02-09) is on the engine end of the cable, and is just listed as a "sleeve." I've ordered one, but I really don't have much hope that it is going to be the right one. Maybe part 275 in the diagram is the one I really should be ordering; that part is 116-302-01-50. On a slightly related matter, the parts counter at the dealer could not seem to look up parts by VIN number... is my car too old at this point to really be supported? Anyone else had this experience? PM me if you have a startek subscription and feel like trying out my VIN number. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. Kurt

Hi whunter,
Thank you for looking up that part for me... however, it turns out that it isn't the one that fits my weird engine. I went and dug out a photo from when I was preparing to pull my engine, and my memory was correct: the part that is missing is a metal threaded part, with a sleeve that the cable goes into. See photo attached; anybody know what this part number is? Anybody got one to sell? Thanks, Kurt

Idle adjuster screw, I believe the MB part number is 6170720471
SCREW for 1979 Mercedes 240 D. #6170720471 At about $27, a bit pricey at the dealer, probably best to get one at the junkyard. Various photos on the attached FSM Job 07-100 show the part. https://www.startekinfo.com/StarTek/outside/12265/disc_2/program/Engine/615/07-100.pdf And here's a photo of the one in my 1978 300SD. The idle adjuster screw is the metal one on the right of the bracket, the plastic one on the left is the cruise control cable adjuster. I'll probably be going to the Pic-n-Pull tomorrow and I'll pull one and post when I have it.

Super, Alec! I can at least get the dealer to look it up, and see if it is still available. Thanks loads for the information.

Yesterday I finally found a 240D with the part still present along with the rubber cable end fitting.
PM me if you still need this part, and I'll ship it your way at no charge.

Cold Start Cable Adjuster
Kurt ;
Glad you're getting what you need, there's a thin 10MM ATF nut on it that you need to snug down so it won't vibrate loose again . I'd get a spare plastic end slot too and stick it in the ash tray with your spare glow plug and taillight fuses... How you install and adjust the cable is critical. Ad idle the end of the cable must not be pulling the throttle linkage unless you've twisted the fast idle knob .
