Injection Pump Timing?
Hey all, considering rebuilding my injectors with Monark nozzles as an upcoming spring project. Do I need to reset the IP timing?
Had the timing chain replaced by an indy 5 months ago - is setting IP timing part of that procedure? OM602 seems to be running pretty well, maybe nailing a little at cold idle, I don't know. I'm mainly curious about the IP timing because I'd really rather everything be optimized on the old car (227K on the odo), and I don't want to mess things up by rebuilding the nozzles and being unable to do the IP timing (not owning a $600 A-B light). Thanks! |

On the 617 rebuilding injectors and renewing chain doesn't mess up the timing.
I wouldn't mess with it

It never hurts to check it. It's not like you have to take the engine out and open it up.
The claim is that IP timing never changes, but I'm skeptical. There are more things that wear than just the chain. -Rog |

Rebuilding the injectors should have no bearing on IP timing.
If you're concerned about checking the timing, your injection pump has a test port on the side where you can view the timing tang on the governor assembly. Find TDC on #1 and rotate the engine to the correct timing mark (14-15˚ ATDC) and see if the tang is centered in the window. If it is, you're done.

The shop manual procedure for replacing the timing chain doesn't include checking or setting IP timing.

Gents,
Thanks for the info. Good to know that I can probably just ignore it, but also that it's easy enough to check. Cheers. |
