From what I am told the first time the noise was heard was yesterday - and it went straight to the foreign car shop, rather than the 5x fail shop, for troubleshooting.
Neither my son or I are mechanics.
We had trusted a mechanic who told us the engine was sound and the replacement of the gaskets and tubing would protect it for a long time.
His is a NAPA shop (supposedly warranted) with lots of certifications hanging around the shop & is a growing business in the area.
We had multiple references to them and they'd done other work for us - generally without problems.
We had good reason to trust them before - but the Benz experience means never again.
We bought the Benz and invested a ton in it as an investment in reliability.
I guess we'll just feed it oil and run it until it dies, then part it out ...
Not to sound negative or rude here, but if you're not comfortable wrenching your own car, let alone changing the oil yourself (a 20 minute with only 3 bolts to play with) why in god's name are putting your son in a 30 plus year old car?

When I was his age which wasn't that long ago (class of 2012), I drove a 300D all through college. That thing was my baby and you can bet well I made sure everything was tip top. That includes making sure every single fluid was fresh and at its appropriate level and replacing critical parts.

I suggest selling the car and switching to a Honda. These cars are not investments nor are they reliable if the owner has neglected critical maintenance items.

I hate to join the grilling OP bandwagon but this is a perfect example of why you have to be somewhat mechanically minded to own old cars. You will pour money down the drain fixing them just to have something else go wrong from neglect.
