300d vs 300sd axle shafts

Are the axle shafts on the 300d and the 300sd interchangeable (compatible)? Thanks for your time.

Even 300D axle shafts are not interchangable across all models of the 300D. You need to be more specific about the exact models you are considering.

The easiest way to resolve this is a complete swap of differential and axles.

Some models have a narrow differential and therefore longer axles.

Your 300SD will have a wider differential and shorter axles.

(Currently, I have the 2.47 differential and Annular axles under my 300SD. These were taken from a 420SEL. This gives me lower rpm at cruise speeds, slightly better economy, and rides much quieter. Also, the CV joint itself is replaceable. The trade off, slightly less off-the-line performance. Which doesn't bother me in the slightest as I'm not in the habit of racing red light to red light.)

Aren't the W123 and W126 chassis different in rear wheel "track"? As in the bearing housings are wider apart, meaning no combo of diff or axle swapping will work?

Hmm.....that may be. I may have gotten away with it by using parts from another W126. You could probably make some measurements with a tape and find out.

"No" seems rather clear.

No.

The differentials are identical.

The trailing arms are identical.

The space between the two is wider on the SD .

The SD has a HUGE inner can/joint on the axle.

The w123 axles actually will fit in, and function on the sd... but it will not last long.

No freaking way on earth to get SD axles into a w123.

The wider 210mm diff from a gasser makes this even trickier...
