How does one install these inline filters?

You splice into the high side metal line, where there is at least 4" straight run.
5/16", 3/8", 1/2" lines will work. There is some "give" to the compression fitting flex sleeves if the line isn't smooth. Cut out a piece out of the metal line equal to the filter length, slip the compresion nuts , compression cones, flex rings onto the lines. Put the filter in the splice (arrow to flow) and tighten up the compression fittings.

Yes, and you want it near the compressor inlet.
