1982 240d power steering box leaking
My 240d with 330k miles seems to be leaking from the bottom of the power steering box. I'm going to power wash underneath the car to make sure but I've attached a photo that shows where I think it's leaking.
Is there a seal at the bottom of the box that could cause a leak from the bottom? Thanks. pete |

Yes, you need to recondition the box (or pay me to).
What is most likely leaking is either the pitman shaft axial seal. It could also be either the bearing oil supply o-ring (less likely) or the pitman cover seal. There is no way to fix this other than taking the box apart and replacing the seals. My service is $145 and I work near Baltimore so you're lucky in not having to ship the 30 lb box.

Martureo,
Thanks for the info and links. I have a steering box from a w123 300d. Do you know if they are the same as the 240? I've attached some pics. Thanks. pete |
