E300 w124 fuel leak
I am planning on replacement of the gasket on the gold colored rectangular plate on the bottom of the injection pump. I have never taken this plate off before. Can I just expect fuel to drain out or will tiny parts rain down on me? I got the part number from Phil as: 001-074-37-80. It is a paper gasket. I am chasing down a fuel leak and have narrowed it down to having to be this by starting from the top and working my way down. The part that I am referring to is in the attached picture rectangle shape with 6 screws. Car is a 1995 E 300 97,000 mi

The plate you're picturing is the cam cover for the injection pump. There is no fuel in there (or there shouldn't be if everything is working properly). When you take the plate off, do expect oil to pour out. Prepare for a mess.

Interesting, obviously the fuel leak must be coming from elsewhere. Looks like the intake manifold is coming off again to conduct further investigation . This is exactly why I asked first before doing.

If the OM606 is anything like the OM603, then there is a banjo bolt on the back side of the injection pump (towards the engine block) for the return fuel line that can leak. Don't rule out the lift pump either. You have checked the O-ring seals on the top where the delivery valves are for wetness right? That is a VERY common place for fuel to leak on any OM60x engine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did replace the delivery valve seals, they definitely needed replacing and now the top of the pump is dry. The plastic lines have been replaced with mercedes parts. I will re-inspect the other items soon. Thank you for the useful ideas.
