Keeping the wagon, selling the E300D

I've been away from the forums too long, folks. The '95 sedan has been so worry-free, I've taken for granted our little community here. Please forgive me!

So, my wife has made it clear that I need to limit myself to one car. Now that I'm moving to 100% work from home consulting, I don't need a commuter car any more.

I made the relatively easy decision that the I can't part with the wagon. I'll be fixing up a few last things on the '95 E300D and finding it a new home.

That said, I had to do something about the rusted out exhaust on the wagon. A quick trip down to a local exhaust shop and a couple bills later, I now have a straight-piped 300TD. It sounds glorious on the highway. Really looking forward to finishing the cosmetics on this car and enjoying the hell out of it.

"Everyone needs at least 2 cars" means 2 for him, 2 for wife. I'm a little short because son just started driving but I'll get the 78 Datsun Z going this summer.

85SD, 84SD, 00 Cummins unfortunately installed in a Dodge, 12 VW TDI, 15 Volvo V60. Then the Z will bring me even until VW buys the TDI back.

If the wife insists on only one for her, he gets 3.

Perfectly logical and simple.

That's exactly right and I like your math. My wife gets two cars, I get two trucks. One of the trucks is a work truck so it doesn't really count, so I am due one more car.

Sounds good!

After getting the Forester, I'd be hard pressed to go back to sedan or coupe for a daily driver. Just too practical, haul too much crap.

The "my wife made/won't let me XYZ" posts baffle me.

No one can drive more than one car at a time. His wife already has a car. See his sig.

I got along with one car for over 40 years. Proof, that it can be done!

Both my kids are out of the house and have their own cars, so I don't have to worry about them. So my wife and I have 5 vehicles with plates and insurance on for just the two of us. We have two regular cars that we drive year round, we call these are "Winter" cars. Then we have two W123's, the 84' Euro coupe and 85' wagon. And one Unimog on the road. We then own 5 other cars or trucks that we don't drive at this time. We are going to start thinning the herd soon, as we are looking to downsize as we get older.

Right? Either grow a pair, or ask for her purse and dig yours back out. If you have a place to park it, it gets driven, and it's cheap to maintain, why can't it stick around?

I have a pair, but I agree with her that we don't need unused cars sitting out front. We live by philosophy that if it isn't used, get rid of it. As I said, I'm not even commuting to work anymore. If I want to look at great cars, I just need to set the background on my monitors or go to Cars & Coffee more.

I'd much rather I enjoy the wagon fully and someone else enjoy the E300D.

Also, I like to make sure I have martial relations as much as possible. While I'm still young...

In all seriousness, I was curious. I'm not married, my girlfriend and I live together but don't share finances, so obviously I have only a very limited view of married life. She has her household responsibilities and I have mine. As long as I take care of my responsibilities, I'm completely free to keep a dozen vintage MBZ diesels or buy a Dodge Viper without asking her, and would neither expect nor accept any hassle for doing so. Likewise for her, she's not a jewelry and purses type of girl but when she bought a multi-thousand-dollar gaming computer system that dims the lights when she hits the power button, I was only happy for her.

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hah. Great typo on my part. Sometime marriage does seem to be like suiting up and taking it to the mat.

All relationships are different, that's what makes them interesting. I'm not going to judge someone else's.

We live in a densely populated neighborhood and I'm the president of the HOA. (If you can't beat it, run it). Aside from owning a garage queen, there's no space for extra cars except on the street and it only looks like crap staying out there long.

The wagon is going to be brought back to full glory. Proper new paint job and rust repair. New or restored leather bits. New carpet. The mechanicals are all sorted with essentially a new suspension all around and a drivetrain that purrs.
