Back to square one: which piece of the hinge is broken, the one screwed to the tailgate or the one screwed to the chassis?

Thank you all for your help and support. Turns out the hinge has three 10mm bolts and a little bedding compound, probably to stifle any potential rattling, but the hinge came out with ease with the bolts removed. I just didn't see the third bolt head at first.

I just saw this thread and was about to chime in and say there are three 10mm bolts. Glad you did find it!
Yeah- watch out new gas strut/shocks which hold up the hatch will take your chin out! Old ones will give you a back of the head concussion. Ask me how I know...
