Bought an '87 300D, tranny leak
I bought an '87 300D on Saturday that was a few hundred miles from home. Made it about 120 miles on the journey home and it developed a bad transmission fluid leak. I left it at a shop.
Talked to the mechanic there this morning, and he says it looked like it was leaking from somewhere up in the tranny tunnel on the drivers side rear. He put some fluid in it, and it drove fine and wasn't leaking anymore. He couldn't say for sure what it was without pulling the tranny. What could be leaking on the top half of the transmission? The car had not been driven much in the last two years. Mostly sitting in the PO's driveway. It was also very hot on Saturday, driving through central texas. I'm glad to get some slightly positive news. Maybe this is a seal that could be replaced? I'll probably bring it the rest of the way home on a trailer. The records show the transmission was rebuilt in '08. Has about 60,000 miles on the rebuild.

This shop sounds incompetent. Find a shop that can identify the leak without pulling the transmission.

Did the transmission slip or was it simply leaking? There is a vent on the top rear. If the transmission is over-filled the fluid will escape through this vent and run down the case. This usually won't happen until the fluid has been warmed by driving for an extended period.
I've seen this happen frequently when someone adds a quart or so of fluid to a car which has been sitting for a while just to be sure it has "enough" fluid or if the fluid level was checked improperly; on an incline, not running, not warmed up etc.

The low hanging fruit is always the pan gasket. It can be hard to tell where the leak actually is coming from, because the air stream tends to carry fluids towards the rear.

The shop mechanic is a moron if he has to pull the trans to tell where a leak is. Run it, clean it, put it on a lift and see where it leaks. What's such rocket science? Probably sounds like it was overruled and puked out the vent. Did you add fluid?

B2 piston cover and rear pump cover behind it tend to be leak points.
