Is there any way to change the glass in an interior mirror?

I have/had two one of which had a perfect mirror and the other a nice functioning frame. I pried on the plastic cover over the good glass and it chipped without separating. There was residue of some type mastic which held the body and that retaining cover together.

I tried prying on the good body to change the mirror but it resisted. Is there perhaps a solvent which would break the glue bond without damaging the plastic frame?

I have not read of anyone removing a good mirror from the housing on an inside mirror. But, that does not mean it is not possible.

Note that a solvent that would eat off Glue might also eat off the mirrored coating on the back of the mirror.

Find of those me recedes parts sites that has the Mercedes parts book and see if the Mirror Glass can be had separate. Write down the part number and use it to shop with.

Story time: I had a Truck that needed a flat rear window glass and my friend gave me a piece of glass from another vehicle.

I did a neat job scribing on and running a glass cutters around the pattern on both sides of the glass.

I tapped on the glass to crack off the part I did not want (as you would do if you were cutting glass for your house) and the whole piece of glass like exploded sending pieces over 1/2 of my living room. That was over 20 years ago and pieces of that glass still show up under furniture and in corners.

I'd take it to my local glass shop or get a used one here.

I knew the glass wouldn't cut without heat and that the heat would destroy the mirror feature.

I believe seeking help at a glass shop is the cheapest option.

Visit a glass shop and have a part cut to just fix on top of the glass of the existing mirror .

that's because any glass in or around the vehicle's passenger capsule is "tempered" in order to prevent injuries do to any large shards of glass forming when any of it is damaged. Safety first.

I broke the glass which had the bad spots. It broke into shards. It didn't break like the windows or windshield. It is 1/4" thick or perhaps a little more. Only small pieces flew out of the frame but some of those shards would kill.

I'm not saying an MB interior mirror is unsafe because I broke it with very odd angles and pressures.

I have a theory that a 123 or a 126 mirror can be removed from its arm/mount and put onto a 124 mirror arm/mount (or vice versa). The ball / joint seems to be the same size, and heating up the joint with a hair dryer will soften it enough so that the ball will pop right out with moderate pressure.

That's actually not a bad idea! I have a dash cam, but it sticks to the windshield and the Arizona sun would bake the thing, plus it would interfere with my Eclipse retractable sunshade. My rear view mirror is also starting to get discoloration, so this might be just what I need.

well, a little off subj but I think the solution is to simply buy a clamp on mirror that also has a wider viewing angle. I use the Broadway brand clip on mirrors on my cars, the added viewing angle shows things in the field off axis that OE mirrors can't.
