ESM problems W210

Just checking, but is it possible to install/program a used ESM module in a W210 ('98 E300)? I know on the newer vehicles it needs to be a new module, but wasn't sure on a car this old. Thanks!

FWIW, the entire problem with this car ended up being a dead battery. Showed ~12V, but had no amperage available to actually do anything with. New battery fixed the problem.
