W211 Speed Sensor Diagnosis

One of the CDI's is at my indie getting rear brakes done and dealing with what is showing up as a bad right rear speed sensor. I was interested to learn that the fault codes that are showing could be due to several different things, including bad ABS module, something to do with the axle, and of course a bad sensor. Apparently Xentry can't tell for certain that the sensor is bad...so the only choice is to replace the sensor and hope that's what it was.

Or swap the rear two sensors and see if the issue moves to the other wheel.

Good point. I wonder if he didn't suggest that because of the extra labor it would have cost me. But obvious solution for DIYer.

Ug...just heard from indie....axle is bad. Oh well, first serious repair in four years of ownership and 30k miles. Not too bad.

Usually the tone ring rusts and becomes detached...…..

Doorman might make replacement tone rings.

This is an example where having the actual code # and a _detailed_ description of the code is critical in diagnosing a problem.

If the sensor has failed electrically, the code should be something like " wheel speed sensor , open circuit " ABS systems look for continuity of the circuit as part of the start up self test.

A sub fault of above can be " intermittent open circuit " due to a failing wire

If the sensor isn't being triggered due to a mechanical fault, the code should be something like " no wheel speed signal "

A sub fault of above could be " wheel speed implausible " due to some teeth being lost on the tone wheel.

Dropped of the new axle with my indie today....I'm $728 poorer, and that's with a 26% discount!

He said that while it is possible to replace the tone ring, there's still the underlying issue of the rust...that unless the axle is perfect, the new tone ring might get distorted. Glad to be replacing the entire thing.
