602 head gasket change then smoking

I had found a head at PnP which cleaned up nicely. I had it checked for flatness, replaced several broken studs, lapped valves and installed new stem seals. I placed this on my engine once complete it smoked fairly hick white diesel smelling smoke. Checked for air in the fuel system, ran on an alternate fuel supply same smoke. Advanced timing smoke was lighter but still present. Total run time maybe n hour.

Was tired of this decided to move the car to be parked till spring started good still smoking reved the engine all smoke cleared and running just fine now. I seem to recall reading others who had replaced a head gasket to have smoke for a few hundred miles befor it cleared. I'm not understanding this unless it had something to do with lapping the valves. Oh ya new lifters sure make this engine quiet at 280 km.

Any chance air persisted in the injector lines for awhile? Anyways it probably was a real relief when it stopped. I even wonder if the new lifters might have produced this effect. Doubt that but something did. The fact it cleared when you sped the engine up did something. Again I suspect it got the air out of the injector lines.

I actually read your post carefully. (Placed the head on the engine was interesting). Sometimes people put a head gasket on first. I cannot help myself at times. Must be a full moon or something.

Air in the injector lines would create late injection and incomplete burn of the fuel. So a white cloud effect is reasonable to me. Burning off oil etc that gets into the bores when an engine is apart burns away very quickly in my limited experience.

Overheated 2 yrs ago didn't notice for 1/2 a block before I shut it down. Once we that happens the head seems to shift around below -10 actually the colder it gets the more it shifts. That shifting causes coolant into no. 5 but once the engine makes it to 60 or above all is good. It degrades fast after those symptoms occur I had been babying it for a while now so just time to fix it.
