Question on intake manifold

I bought an OM603 NA intake manifold with plans to modify for an intercooler setup.
I didnt notice in the pictures, but once I got it I found it has a brass nipple sticking out right above the flange, one for each cylinder. Can anyone tell me what they are used for in the stock application?
