300TD question...

Looking around my work and drove by a 300TD with a third row seat in immaculate condition (at least body wise.) It was beautiful! Unfortunately, it was not registered, and was parked in a lot. I am guessing either the engine is shot or he just got bored with it. 386K, it seemed to serve quite well. Now to my question: I was talking to a mechannic yesterday who worked on Mercedes diesel taxicabs in the Azores. He had his personal car which he kept in immaculate condition until it rusted. The engine hadnt been started in 6 months, but started right up made a strong sound. The engine and tranny only had 126K miles(!) He wants these junk cars out of his yard, and says he could install the engine and transmission from his personal car for five hundred bucks. Question is, will this 1980 Non turbo engine and transmission fit into a 300TD wagon which was a turbo? This is assuming I take out the original engine and transmission, and replace it with the non turbo 300D engine. Thanks!
