i think that people forget how hot the oil gets. i have an oil temp gauge on my 2018 ram and it get hotter than the coolant.
i think that after a long period of time a paper filter will feel the effects of 200F oil and fail at some point letting into the engine all the junk it has been collecting for a number of years.

Oil must get hot to remove moisture. Thats why the OM6xx have an oil thermostat that keeps the oil 110c.
