Houston, we have a problem.

I have all the interior restored on my 85 380SE after putting the 84SD engine and transmission in it. The wiring is finished to accommodate the om617.

One of my a-hole neighbors has turned me in to the codes people who are insisting I move/dispose of the car.

I am going to talk to the codes people tomorrow and show them how far this project has come and hope they give me another six months or so to get the car painted before I have to replace the exterior lighting.

Is there a legal way around compliance with the code? I only have this one car and it's sitting in my carport, I have no garage.

It is missing exterior trim in preparations to paint the body. Technically, it's inoperable.

Actually, there are several cars here but only this one fails to comply with code.

Scotch tape the trim back on the vehicle for a temporary fix.

Ask the inspector how much time you have and is there anyway to get that extended e.g., if significant progress gets made on the project. Also ask what needs to be done to be in compliance in order for the car to remain. Whatever you do, don't get on the "wrong side" of the inspector as it could only hurt your situation. They have rules they must follow but often wish they didn't have to follow. Our town inspector is reasonable, he is not the person that issued the summonses.

Neighbor just got two court summonses and fines for this, no warnings. A knock on their door would have done the same thing but now he has to deal with it in the freezing weather.

Good luck to you!!!

Just saw your post about missing trim, reattach it with small pieces of moulding tape.

Most jurisdictions will approve an extension if it is obvious progress is being made.

As mentioned above, be nice. City folks deal with a lot of unreasonable people and making yourself stand out by being reasonable and polite goes a long way.

Good luck!

Ever heard of a car cover? That’s a good preventative measure, along with a lot of neighborly good deeds. I park my cars on the street, and cover the ugly ones, make sure the tags are legit on any that are potential problems, and am the most active person picking up trash on the street, and also keep my own yard looking good. Never had any real problems. Sounds like you are a little late to the game, but I suggest you go get a nice car cover right now, and when the inspector asks you to take the cover off, have that thing looking as good as it can be.

Yea, if you live in that sort of area, I would have had it under a cover the entire time. Aside from that, move to a different area without these sort of karen rules.

How many cars are there that are visible to the neighbors? This seems like the real root issue, correct? but this dismantled car is the one that they actually got u on.

That sucks that you cant have whatever you want on your own property!!!

Ive dealt with a good handful of concrete inspectors at work, I know this is a different type of inspector but I imagine the same principles will apply. If you are polite, explain your situation, and offer a plausible solution and/or explanation to the problem most of them will respond well to that. I imagine you will just have todo a bit of cleaning up or tucking away the car (and maybe your other cars) and everything will be fine.

You can likely do this on the internet. Here when they tell you about something they send you 2 registered letters. In the letter is the code you are supposable violating and the codes will be different from city to city.

Use the violation code and look up the law and read it closely.

Where I am you are allowed 2 vehicles if they cannot be viewed from the front or back yard. The term they use is screened from view which they do not define in the code.

After that if the car runs of not here it needs to be registered. In the case here registered means it is licensed for this year and has the year sticker on it; non-op registration is not sufficient. Of course in order to be registered it needs insurance and the emissions test if it is gasser.

There is other laws if the car is rusty and so on but as I said that is here.

Look up the law so you know what it has to say and by all means contact the Code Guy/Person to see about an extension and ask if a car cover will help things. Remember the code people are used to dealing with likely a lot of angry people. Just be reasonable and polite but don't let them onto your property to see things then cannot view from the street because if hey see anything else they will site you for that.

When I had an issue with the exterior stucco and flaking tex coat on my house they gave me more time because I explained that due tex coat coming off I had to remove that in order to prep the surface.

Just bought a Car Cover at PepBoys. It was $70 and I got minus the 10% veterans discount.

I also had them actually write a citation. Once they do that you either pay or go to court. I went to court and beat the ticket because I read the Law and the person who wrote the ticket was wrong. However, it took 3 months to get the money you have to pay when you go to court back.

Some people use these as a remedy:

https://www.harborfreight.com/10-ft-x-17-ft-portable-garage-62860.html

-No longer in public view
-Temporary, self supporting structure does not require a permit

Also, not being a jerk or getting riled up (even if they attempt to get you riled up) helps with the code enforcers.

It depends on the City. My Stepfather bought one and after 4 years they came by and told him he had to take it down. Why, because it could be seen from the Street.

It would be better if he simply asked what his options were. While it is true they may or may not tell him he has other options. It is worth asking.

Here in Long Beach, CA you are not allowed to work on your Car on the City Streets. However, at least in my area they don't seem to enforce that.

I talked to the code guy who wrote the warning. I had failed to put the current sticker on my old truck but didn't discover that until the past weekend.

I am always polite to people unless they at b-holes then I just ignore them.

The project car has to be 'operable and licensed.' The truck runs so that's good. The engine starts in the project car and transmission is ready for that 20 min drive to top off the fluid but I need to reassemble the engine cooling system where I disconnected some hoses to fit the flushing setup to it. So a couple hours on that and swapping the 'CLEMSON,' tag from the engine's donor car and I'm comply with both codes.

He didn't seem to care about the trim or even the exterior lights. He wouldn't discuss that issue. He had a really good attitude about the project when I showed him photos of the exterior trim such as aluminum, lower plastic molding and the fresh seats, door panels and refinished wood trim.

I learned from his credentials on the county website that he had worked in the Pickens Co in the Clemson area, I wore my best Clemson cap and hoodie.

I freaked out over nearly nothing. The guy didn't complain about the car and truck being registered in Tennessee. I reckon when he saw the 2020 registration of the tag on the car he knew why I kept a Tennessee residence.

The donor car is long gone.

I'm still looking for those few pieces of steering gearbox parts. If anyone has a bad gear and wants to sell those parts I shall be eternally indebted. Well, maybe not that long but I have a building filled with 126 parts and a few things from a 123 I might part with one of them to anyone who helps me.

Thanks for the advise, gentlemen.
