W124 Hood Release Problem

When I pulled the hood release on my W124, the hood popped open but the release didn't snap back...it stayed in the down position. I thought I had closed the hood again and couldn't get it open...but I was able to (thankfully the hood hadn't closed all the way).

FYI it has been extremely cold...about 10F. So I wonder if it's a problem of the cable not moving freely. I'm pretty confident the cable isn't broken.

It's a 30 year old cable...I should probably just get it replaced or I could have a real headache on my hands.

Thanks for any insights.

Or try a little oil on the release mechanism. Shame it is difficult to put a light weight lubricant in the cable.

It looks like the latch itself just needed lubed...and the problem was made worse by the extreme cold. After some penetrating oil and grease I'm back in business.
