HELP! Cant find a W124 Expansion Tank to buy.

I need a new expansion tank (1245001849) for my 1987 W124 300D, like this one offered by our host site here:

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300D Base Sedan - Radiators - Page 3

However, I have tried 5 places now (Peach, parts.com, ebay, autohauz) and everyone accepted my order then sent an email saying they don't have it and are issuing a refund. Called the Dealer and they say it is unavailable and out of production.

Anyone know where to get one?

Thanks,

Geoff

Any possibility that the tank from a later W124 could be made to fit/work?

Odd. I had no trouble getting my 87 turbo 190 tank from the dealer... I'll call my guy and get you a firm quote. May have to wait for it to arrive from Germany

Just put the part number you have into a search engine and wade through the hits. I get pages and pages of offerings...

Thanks, for the help.

I have done a search for the part and keep running into the same thing, they say they have it then it turns out they don't. tried lots of sources. I am going to go to the yard today and see if either of the 2 models there have a tank that looks like it is in good shape although I wanted a new one since mine appears good until it get pressurized (at least I think that is the case). This is all part of the rundown to figure out my cooling issue.

VSTECH the VIN is WDBEB33D3HA371870.

Thanks again for the help.

I'm pretty sure I have one, it's in good condition but the plastic was discolored so I replaced it when I installed the engine, just a cosmetic thing.

I'll look later today, if it's here and I can find a suitable box I'll let you have it for shipping. Can't guarantee it's here (yet) though.

I presume you are looking for the expansion tank near the turbo, not the overflow tank in the fender?

The expansion tank contains a silica gel tank, which maintains the coolant corrosion protection. Although a used tank can probably do everything else, a new tank would be preferable in the long run.

Note that performing the acid flush of the cooling system will kill that silica pack, so hold onto your old tank if you plan to do an acid flush in the future, and swap in the old tank for the flush.

Another possible source for a new tank: Thomas Hanson at the Classic Center, 1 949-598-4842

The original tank did not have the SCA pack in it, perhaps later 124 models did, I don't believe that my new dealer/OE tank that I bought/installed 5-6years ago has one.

If you install the proper HOAT coolant / MB-spec., and observe proper change intervals I suspect that you will be fine as this is a dry-sleeve engine and designed with the original configuration. If you are able to find a new tank, certainly I'd prefer (and did so) to install new OE.

Crap!

the new tank I got doesn't fit in the location of the old tank. Old (original) tank is #1245000949, new tank is #1245001749, I thought I was getting 1245001849. the old tank has the level switch on the end and the radiator hose going to the bottom. The new tank has the level switch and hose connection from the side and so there is no way to reinstall the air filer assembly plus I cant get the hose to connect because if it is metal pipe until about 4 inches from the expansion tank.

Any ideas other than looking for a new 1245001849 tank?

Also my current tank definitely has a leak around the cap collar where it connects to the plastic tank, as you can see bubbles as the engine gets hot now that I have a new cap that works correctly.
