kkk turbo core cartridge source?

Good day everyone,
I have a 1999 MB e300 turbodiesel avantgarde estate wagon with about 200km on it. Seems a bit underpowered lately and I don't hear the turbo whine I used to. I have removed it though it doesn't seem loose and wobbly the leading edges of the fan blades on the intake side are rough to teh touch and seem to have a bit of a rolled edge. I will try to post photos. I wonder if there is a known source for replacement core cartridges? It appears to be the 'kkk' model.

You shouldn't be able to hear the stock turbo. The damaged fins were causing an imbalance and poor airflow, thats the sound you were hearing.

That kind of damage is caused by a poorly fitted or very dirty air filter, or a split in the inlet ducting.

Exactly.

Could the turbo still be working even though the blades are in this condition? Would
the manifold vacuum test to check the boost pressure the best place to start

Yes, but very inefficiently. You risk blowing oil into your engine and metal into it if the compressor wheel fails.

You should measure the intake manifold pressure to get an idea of how the turbocharger is working. I think when floored, you should see 9 psig boost, or a little more. If not, it probably isn't working or the wastegate controls are buggered. The turbocharger guts seem fairly standard, at least the rebuild kits cover many models from various manufacturers. But, that is just the shaft bearings and seals. The compressor and exhaust wheels surely vary between sizes. The ones on our M-B engines appear to have a different housing than most since the O-ring for the compressor shell is much too big OD in the generic kits.

Stock on an OM606 is 15psi.
Doesn't really matter for his turbo, it's munched and needs replaced no matter what. Plus fixing whatever inlet issue caused the damage to begin with.

I second that. If the wheel lets go the metal shards go right into the engine and it will spew oil uncontrolled into the intake. Worst case this causes a run away.

You should be able to find a diesel shop that can rebuild it for you. I had a US 1998 E300 with the 606 and I am pretty sure it was a KKK turbo. It’s either going to be that or a Garrett.

Should be fairly easy to pull it there is plenty of room down the right side (assuming you are LHD there in Panama).

But yeah you also need to address the root cause so the repaired unit does not fail.

Edit: just looked at the first picture again, you have a KKK turbo, the logo is a triangle with 3 K’s in it, upper left corner of the nameplate (kind of washed out) and also in the casting to the right of the nameplate.
