Submit your tricks for removing OM617 front crankshaft spacer

I am replacing the spacer and seal behind the harmonic balancer. No problems until I get to the spacer -- it is being onery. I have the article "617 Front Crankshaft Seal" describing the drink cup tool and the participants talk like this spacer comes out easy. I found a posting on the w116.org where the guy removed the upper seal cover and got behind the spacer with screwdrivers and a hammer. I tried that -- so far no good. I be wondering if a bit of heat (torch) would work. Does anybody have a trick as slick as the drink cup, or a Sir Tools M0033 tool?

I used an old wood chisel. It was sharper than a small screwdriver and got into the gap. Once the gap opened up I could get it out. Good luck with that!

It should not really be that hard to remove but put a little heat to it since you are replacing the seal.

Larry, Assuming your doing this with the crank installed I'd try penetrating oil overnight and then a few well placed strikes with a punch angled toward making it rotate. I realize it won't rotate but the impacts may shock it loose. My next choice would be heat.

Good luck!!!

If I am understanding the post correct you are trying to remove the cast aluminum piece that is held in with (4) m6 10mm Hex head bolts and (2) M6 5mm Allen key bolts coming from the bottom (they go through upper oil pan). when I have a stubborn one I just thread the allen key bolts back in leaving them a few MM away from contacting the upper oil pan and then hit them both back and forth with a rubber mallet. This is usually enough to free that piece.

That is not the piece he is trying to remove.

My spacer slid right off while prying with two small straight screwdrivers oriented 180º apart. Prying with only one screwdriver did not work.
