Who has sorted through making/repairing their own hydraulic hoses

Many power steering hoses have a metal fitting crimped to the hose. I'm working on an 00 Dodge Cummins and know that the 85TD will have similar issues and the 85SD might also.

Is there a crimper and fittings that would be flexible to work on most applications? Sometimes, it's easier to have the tool. Others It's easier to simply buy the part.

I'm aware of the threads where people add 2 hose clamps so we don't need to revisit that subject.

What have you found regarding remaking the hose using the stock fittings?

The Mercedes uses field replaceable fittings. Just buy the hose and the fittings are reusable. Otherwise take your hose to a hydraulic shop and have a new one made.
Most oreilly auto stores around here may hydraulic hoses.

I posted a Fix It (or wiki?) on re-rubbering the high-side power steering hose. As shadetreemechan stated, it uses "field-repairable" fittings (Gates?) which you can unscrew with box wrenches. The SLS hoses on the wagons are similar (where I learned). The shell screws onto the OD of the hose, while the inner mandrel (tube side) screws into the ID of the hose. One is a left-hand thread, I recall the shell which has a smoother "lightbulb" type thread profile. Factory hose has nylon tensioners, but I used 2-wire "hydraulic hose" (3K psig rated, ebay or Tractor Supply). The low-pressure hose just slips on. I posted possible part numbers in the article.

Re other hoses, to look slick buy a MasterCool crimper and ferrules (ebay, sell on when done). You can make your own AC hoses and oil-cooler hoses (parts on ebay). Instead of ferrules, you could use Oeticker stepless ear clamps for a slick look (nail-puller as crimper, or Home Depot PEX crimper). Even worm clamps can work, as aftermarket AC in the 1970's used those (Breeze smooth worm clamps are best).

I have seen SEVERAL W123’s with crimped on hoses. My guess is the previous owners didn’t know they were rebuildable, and went to auto zoo or similar and bought cheapo replacements.

If the stock hoses are in place, the hose fittings are fairly simple to rebuild, iirc, the fitting reverse threads into the hose, then the collar winches tight over… it could be the reverse… it’s been a while.
