1993 Mercedes w124 300D not moving forward but moves in reverse

I have a 1993 mercedes benz 300D W124 automatic diesel which does not move when engaged in drive but move when engaged in reverse. It was very slow at take off before and it had a lickage of transmission fluid. When i raise the rear wheels up it acts normal

Did you fill more transmission fluid into it to replace the lost fluid?

That is going to be really inconvenient, especially when driving at night.

Were there symptoms before it happened or was it sudden?

You are describing the symptoms of a B2 piston in the transmission failure or a cracked B2 band.
I am not sure what year the most updated B2 piston went into the transmissions, but the updated ones are not supposed to break as mine did on my 84 300D. There is also a lip seal and a bushing associated with it. On mine the bushing is aluminum and that was replaced with a nylon one.

With the B2 piston out you may or may not be able to tell by pushing on the end of the B2 band if it is cracked/broken or not.

On mine it started off with flaring as it took a lot of rpms before it engaged and went forward, and I changed the filter and fluid and that went away for about a year and then the B2 piston broke.

There may be other causes, but that is all I have had experience with.
