240d MT shift linkage issues

Many of you have not heard from me in a while as I have mostly moved, still attempting to empty out and sell a house full of stuff as I work 40 hours and live someplace else, having recently gotten married.

One car which I have kept and maintained for the most part is the yellow 1979 240D which Tom Walgamuth called " Pancakes" and which I bought from him.
That car is currently stored in one of my two concrete floored pole barns, along with other stuff. It will be started as soon as the weather gets warmer and brought back to pristine shape.

Before doing that, I need advice from the community on an MT issue.
I used the car to date my bride and it worked well. However, I stopped using it when I started to have a problem shifting the MT. The shift linkage was literally all over the place and I could only get it in 3rd gear.

I am thinking that this might be the shift linkage and will need to bone up on this before I start taking things apart. I have much less stuff now but need to keep things more orderly, so everything is being arranged, I am building many 8X8x2 foot shelves (16, plus a mezzanine inside the tall barn) so there will be room for cars and parts in one barn and machinery and a 20' four-post lift in the other (need 2 years for that one.

But first-- Pancakes! Is this:
1. a shift linkage issue?
2. A clutch issue?
3. a MT issue?

I doubt #3 but I need to test for each and also to find the area where the FSM discusses shift linkage.

Local shops are either ignorant or outrageous ($300 to open the hood).

I sent a note to Pierre Hedary but he is too far to provide any assistance.

Tom, do you remember anything about Pancakes.

And--- whoi has a good shift linkage set that isn't too costly?

Thanks

Start by cleaning, lubricating, adjusting the shift linkage, replacing ALL of the shift bushings (6?) and changing the oil in the transmission.

IIRC, that transmission calls for ATF, don't use gear oil in it if it calls for ATF.

Good luck!!!

90% chance the rubber bushings in the shifter forks have deteriorated and maybe even fallen out. Not a big deal.
