Axle Depth in Rear Diff Question

Hi all,
I put new axles on. The old ones had a single thin washer. I swapped it over and could not get the c-clip to fasten. It appeared the axle was not able to get far enough in to the diff. So I took the washer off and the c-clip went on easily. Now I'm worried the axle is too far in to the housing. Can you tell from looking at the picture? There is space, but not much.

The washers are selective; the objective is to wind up with zero clearance. If the c-clip can be installed & rotated, but there is no discernible axle end play, the objective has been met.
