diagnosing bad lower ball joints
On my 123, when I stand outside the car, turn the wheel with one hand and feel the wheel with the other hand, I can sense a distinct pop and as the wheel just starts to turn. It sound to be coming from the hub/spindle/lower ball joint area. On this vehicle, I have new upper control arms, tie rods, shocks and idler bushings. The left lower ball is split and leaking. Currently, this car handles really good.
On my 126, there is a sort of a feeling like the right wheel is bouncing when going over expansion joints at highway speeds. It is bouncing way more than it should. On this vehicle, I have new shocks, upper control arms, idler bushings, drag/center link, left track guide joint and steering damper. No obvious cracks in the lower ball boots. Currently, this car doesn't feel that good at highway speeds, shakey on the right (the tires need replacing, but this shake feels more structural). I have jacked both and let the front wheels hang, but can't observe any excess play or other weird behavior. I think I am looking at 4 new lower ball joints and an installer from performance. Does anyone else have any ideas, or words of sympathy? I should be pretty good at doing lowers by the time I finish...
