more than a boot repair?
Hello all,
I definintely have two damaged rear boots. Is this a possible "do it yourself" project, or is it shop time? Also...would someone please help me identify if I am looking at more than boot repair? The big bad clunking is present. Thank you! |

The 300TD is getting rebuilt rear 1/2 shafts this weekend. I'll try to get some photos.

More than a boot repair
Clunking is not good, if its been clunking for any period of time it's time for a rebuild or replacement. replacing your halfshafts with rebuilt units would be easier than removing, rebuilding and replaceing your own, if you have descent tools and mechanical ability you could do it yourself.

Boot repairs are doable if the joints are still good, but I wouldn't view them as much more than a temporary repair. I did one of mine a couple of years ago, and it didn't last more than a year. I then replaced the half shaft with a rebuilt one from Advance Auto (for about $168), but it is now making some noise. This is disappointing, because my old shaft wasn't making any noise, just had bad boots. I guess this is the risk we run when using rebuilt parts.

Thank you for your comments and insights.
It seems as if I may be lucky if all that is needed is a boot repair. Can you tell me how I can tell if the joints are still good? Part of the interest in these cars are the mechanics involved. I would like to learn and do more. Would you be willing to mentor me through something like this? Thanks again. |

The only way I know to determine the joint condition is to observe whether it makes noise when in service. The noise is usually a clicking or clunking sound and can change when the car leans going around turns or when the power to the rear wheels changes. I have one now that is noisey when you push in the clutch and cost to a stop. One individual on the forum got his mechanic to ride in the trunk to listen for CV joint noise.
You can buy split boots for about $20, and if the joints are still good they will work. These have been discussed a bunch on the forum and there are many posts that list the manufacturer's. The 123 style joints cannot be taken apart without special and very expensive tooling. Good luck.

I got the mechanic to ride in the trunk to figure out which side was bad. He is still there, feed him through the first aid kit hole I removed for sub woofer sound
Clunking is not good. Ended up having to replace rear wheel bearings because the bind it puts on the axels caused them to heat up and start leaking. Best bet is to replace it and it is a DIY job IF you are above a novice. |
