Odometer stopped working

My odometer stopped working a couple hundred miles ago. If you reset the trip it will work for a while then stop. Does it need a cleaning? Can it be fixed? Does it need to be replaced? What normally goes bad?

There seems to be a small gear that is friction-fitted to the shaft that ultimately drives the odometer. The gear sometimes will begin slipping on the shaft. Here is a link to a page outlining the repair, if this is indeed your problem:
