Cigar Hoser

What is the significance of the shape of the "cigar hose"?
It is a little strange to me that one would want to transition from such a small diameter, to the varying cigar hose, then BACK into a very small diameter.

The bloating in the hose helps to dampen the pulses created by the injection pump. You can think of it as a shock absorber of sorts for your fuel system. I've seen where people who replace this hose with a straight, non-factory hose find out quickly that it affects the way the car runs.
