Noise!
Hate to call this new but... Why exactly are diesels so noisy? Is it planned piston slap? Over stressed camshaft work? Why do these engines sound like a box-a-rocks?

The combustion process on a diesel happens much more quickly than on a g@$$er. It's not instantaneous, but it's close enough to be more of an explosion. For example, if you ever hear a g@$$er detonating, that engine's doing the same thing that a diesel's designed to do (in a g@$$er's case, usually 'cause they're too hot or the valve timing's off; but in that case it's not on purpose). I believe there is also a small amount of piston slap (the piston skirts on diesel pistons are much shorter than on g@$$ers) that's designed to be in there, but it's not much...
