Talking I did it! I changed the starter!

Wow! what a nightmare. I would hate to do this for a living. A few things saved me:
1) Extenders, extenders, extenders...

2) Extra bolts, I always save extra bolts from previous projects so when they disappear, I'm covered.

3) Jack stands. Getting both wheels off the ground. I had to wrap my legs around the drivers side tire and use my hips to move it around so I coud maneuver out the old starter and the new one in...

Fortunately I figured out that you have to remove the transmission mount bolts or you will never get the top starter bolt....

Good luck to all who dare attempt this nightmare!

Yes, you do deserve a pat on the back. The starter in the five cylinder is extremely challenging to change. This is one of the MANY reasons that I prefer the four cylinder 240D. This and many other operations are an absolute piece of cake due to the extra room because of the loss of one cylinder.

Good job,

Good job:

Your message sent a chill through my body remembering that bloody, oily day in my life. Or was it two days???

I tell you what,

I dont like giving up in just about anything but would have to recommend paying someone to do that next time. I tried for at least four hours just couldnt get any leverage on the top bolt. The mechanic only charged 125 to put it in. I was happy to pay it.

I almost gave up! That darn top bolt almost kicked my ass! Right when I was about to reassemble and call it quits, I noticed that I could unbolt the transmission mount and gain access...That plus about 2 full feet of socket extenders and a universal! I hope I never have to do this again but at least I know how!

Thanks for the tip---

Never changed a starter on the 5 cylinder and now I know I never will. Had often wondered how tough it would be. Think I'll write a check for this repair whenever it happens. Got pretty fast at changing out the starter on my wife's 240D--had bad luck with some lousy rebuilds
