latest test drive--opinions on worth
Well my test drive went pretty well, but now I'm even more confused. 83 300d 147k---Car has a water leak problem. (versed in the threads covering this). No tach. Sunroof inoperative. Engine starts right up and idles smooth. R-134 ac is working from side vents not center. Vaccum line plugged for shut off fix. Transmission seems good, but had to throw it into 3rd to get power. Something not really tight in front suspension, but not bad. Paint is bad. Corrosion under back window seal. Bad fading on hood and top. No radio. Oil pressure pegged at 3 while driving slips to 1.5 with no acceleration. Few other rust spots. Checked blow-by after test drive. Continual puffing of light smoke visible during the day. Dirty, oily engine. Very uncomfortable front seat, but pleasantly surprised by legroom. (I am 6 foot seven). Owner is 6 foot 8 and has 2 other 123 300's in driveway. Owner says has owned car for two years. Just did complete brake job, changes own oil, transmission and ac service, but hasn't adjusted valves since he's owned it. Fairly adequate oil stains on driveway. Owner is asking 2500. I'm thinking 1000-1500. Your opinions are highly valued and appreciated.

From what you've described, it has more than 147K or it was a really rough 147K. Offer $1500.

Thanks turbodiesel
Thank you Turbodiesel for your input. I think I am going to pass on this one and keep looking for something a little nicer. I want an operative sunroof and something that just feels a little more solid. I wish I had more driving experience with the diesels so I would know what it's supposed to feel like. Oh well. The guy selling really loves these cars so I am gonna turn him on to this site. I hope he's not offended about worth of his car, but if he is he is. I just really love this site and know that he will too. Aloha

There is something to be said for a 617 diesel that is below 150K miles. There is also a great deal to be said (negative) for a rusty and rotting body. I'd say you pegged it on the price and can definitely understand walking away.
