Help w/transmission - 84 300TDT

Hi all. My transmission (auto) is giving me problems. It won't upshift unless I redline it (and even then it struggles) and then won't downshift afterward. Needless to say I stopped driving it so I won't kill the tranny. Any suggestions/causes? The only transmission work done was to replace the cooler lines (not the hoses). Am I looking at replacing it? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm. Everything OK with the cooler lines? No big leaks, etc? I assume so, but never hurts to ask.

Check the Bowden cable -- it should be all the way in at idle and all the way extended at full throttle without any slack or compression of the spring. Small changes can cause big trouble. I don't know how you could have changed anything by changing the cooler lines, since they are on the bottom and the bowden cable goes in the top, but hey.

Did you change the fluid while you were in there? If so, make sure the filter is the correct one and installed correctly -- again, pretty hard to screw up since only the correct one fits and if it was really off, the pan won't go on!

Otherwise, it sounds like a stuck governor -- this may or may not cure itself with clean fluid.

I don't know if this will relate to your problem, but here are a couple of suggestions that I started with to pinpoint my problem:

1. Check to see if the vacuum line from the vacuum modulator [under the car and on the driver's side of the tranny (red or green)] up to the engine compartment is still in place

2. Unplug the vacuum line [the same one as in #1] to the tranny and see if it makes any impact [negative or positive]

3. Try manually shifting with the gear indicator

4. Try forcing the car to shift with hard acceleration and letting off the gas

By doing these, you might find a vacuum source for your problems rather than a tranny source
