New Diesel in NA..not MB

In an effort to increase the fuel efficiencies in the cars it brings to market, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler division plans to test a diesel-powered Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle in North America starting in 2004.

What in the world ever made you think, or anyone else, that this won't be an MB diesel powered vehicle? The Cummins diesel engine in the full soze Dodge trucks, I think, are too big for the Liberty. I wouldn't be surprised if it is a CDI 5cyl turbo from the Sprinter or something..

"DaimlerChrysler to test new diesel in North America but not in a MB"

would not fit in the subject line. :-)

If in a jeep why not in a MB..don't get it.

Lightbulb

Maybe it is a NEW DIESEL engine line just for the Jeep/Chrysler truck range. Why not in an MB car in NA? Well, MB makes some great diesel engines abroad that aren't shipped here due to the emissions standards. Emissions standards are less stringent for trucks compared to automobiles. I think that's why...

Is it the same engine they use in Europe ( for the Liberties and other Jeeps), if so I believe it's Italian made. I think it's 4-cylinder.

The European Grand Cherokee has the 2.7 liter CDI unit available. I think for American market tastes, this thing would at least have to have 160 or so horsepower in a vehicle the size and weight of the Liberty, and probably over 200 pounds/feet of torque. 4-cylinder? Made by Italians? Why bother when MB has excellent larger 5 and 6-cylinder units...
